United States and Canada GHS Implementation

In May 2012, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced the implementation of a new Hazard Communication Standard 2012 (HazCom 2012). This announcement brings alignment of the U.S. standard with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).

As a result of this change, OSHA will now require a single standardized format for safety data sheets (SDSs)1 Formally known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and GHS prescribed wording and hazard symbols on labels. This will require significant changes to all Elementis U.S. SDSs and product labels. These new U.S. SDSs and labels will more closely resemble the SDS and label formats currently being used in the European Union, China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea.

Elementis is committed to complying with the requirements of HazCom 2012 and will ensure compliance by OSHA's deadline of June 1, 2015. Elementis began to implement HazCom 2012 compliant SDSs and labels starting in the latter part of 2013. This work is continuing through 2014 and Elementis expect to complete the implementation by the first quarter of 2015. During this period you can expect to see both old and new format SDSs and labels.

Canada has aligned the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The WHMIS 2015 legislation went into effect February 11, 2015. Elementis will begin preparation of Canada GHS Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and labels starting in the third quarter of 2015. We will have Canada GHS compliant SDSs and labels for all products sold into Canada in place by Health Canada’s implementation deadline of June 1, 2017.

Elementis thanks you for your understanding during this transition period and should you have any questions about these changes please contact your Elementis representative or the nearest Elementis Customer Service center.
